Vol. 356 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin/Derry Air Service.

20.

asked the Minister for Communications the 1984 cost of the Dublin-Derry air service; and his proposals for 1985.

Consequent on the collapse of Avair Ltd., who had been providing the Dublin-Derry service, no subsidy moneys were paid in 1984. I recently approved a proposal from Aer Arann for the resumption of service on the route in question. It is hoped that the new service will commence on 1 April or 1 May next.

Would the Minister say how much subsidy will be made available to that service in 1985?

I am not in a position to give that information because the proposals have not been finalised. I hope they will be in the very near future.

The Minister referred to a date when the services will be renewed. Surely, therefore, he must be able to give a general estimate.

I would prefer not to speculate on the amount of the subsidy. As soon as the facts are available I will let the Deputy know.

Will the subsidy be more or less than in the last full year?

It will be about the same amount.

Is it envisaged that this will become an all the year round service?

I would hope so.
