The prior written approval of the farm development service has been a requirement for grant aided investment since the farm modernisation scheme was introduced in 1974. I do not propose to alter this requirement. Information on the numbers of applications rejected because of non-compliance with the prior written approval requirement or on the amount involved is not available.
