asked the Minister for Social Welfare the extra moneys that would be needed to fund unemployment benefit and assistance if the average level of unemployment in 1985 were (a) 230,000, (b) 235,000 or (c) 240,000.

The cost of paying unemployment benefit (including pay-related benefit) and unemployment assistance in 1985 to an additional thousand on the unemployed register would be about £2.5 million. On this basis the information sought by the Deputy is estimated to be as follows:
