Vol. 356 No. 3

Written Answers. - Youth Employment Levy.

483.

asked the Minister for Labour the total amount of moneys collected in County Wexford for the years 1983 and 1984 under the youth employment levy scheme.

There are three broad categories of persons liable for payment of the youth employment levy, namely (i) the PAYE sector, (ii) the self-employed and (iii) farmers.

As regards the PAYE sector, the amount of levy collected in County Wexford is estimated at £761,000 in the 1983 calendar year and £820,000 in the 1984 calendar year. These estimates are extremely tentative and are based on PRSI returns by employers in County Wexford and assumptions regarding the distribution of the returns between the youth employment levy and other charges.

The amount of levy collected from the self-employed in County Wexford was £101,667 in 1983 and £82,471 in 1984.

The youth levy is collected from farmers on a financial year basis. £98,497 in Youth Levy was collected from farmers in respect of 1982-83 and £110,094 in respect of 1983-84. Due to legal and administrative difficulties, these moneys were not collected until 1984.
