Written Answers. - Public Sector Employment.

475.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give a breakdown on the figure of 5,000 net reduction in public sector employment in the national plan in respect of each of the years 1984-85, 1985-86 and 1986-87 in respect of each of the following categories of employees in the public sector: (a) non-industrial civil servants; (b) industrial civil servants; (c) national teachers; (d) secondary teachers; (e) vocational teachers; (f) teachers in comprehensive schools; (g) employees of universities; (h) employees of other third level educational institutions; (i) officers of local authorities; (j) officers of health boards; (k) officers (other than teachers) of vocational education committees; (l) servants of local authorities; (m) servants of Health Boards; (n) servants of vocational education committees; (o) employees of each non-commercial State body; and (p) employees of each commercial State body.

The change in employment in public sector services for the period 1984 to 1987 as indicated in the national plan is an overall planning aggregate which is related to the public finance targets in the plan. The precise changes in employment in the various categories outlined in the question will depend on how the cash allocations for each service are applied over the plan period. Accordingly it is not possible to give the detailed information sought by the Deputy.
