The estimated net receipt of income tax collected through the PAYE mechanism in 1984 was £1,682.3 million. The corresponding post budget estimate for 1985 is £1,860 million. These figures cover more than income tax on ordinary wages and salaries. They include tax paid by directors of close companies who are akin to the self-employed as well as tax on "other income" of employees such as rent and other investment income.
