Vol. 356 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

629.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the serious school transport difficulties being encountered in an area (details supplied) in County Galway; the total number of students from this catchment area attending second level schools in 1985, 1984 and 1983; the total number of standard school buses servicing this area in 1985, 1984 and 1983; the reason for the reduction in the school bus numbers; the reason revised transport plans which were submitted for this area to her Department some time ago have not been implemented; if she will now direct that extra buses be made available in this area and that normal times of collection and delivery operate in the area for these students; and if she will make a statement on this serious situation.

I understand that the organisation of school transport services to Ballinasloe post primary centre is being reviewed at present. This review is being carried out by CIE in consultation with the transport liaison officer for County Galway who has responsibility for the local administration of post primary school transport in the Ballinasloe catchment area. The review has not been finalised but I will advise the Deputy of any revised arrangements which may be made.

The number of eligible pupils from the areas in question who availed themselves of school transport during the school years 1982-83 and 1983-84 were 75 and 67 respectively. During the current school year, the number is 85.

At present, a large school bus and a private contractor's vehicle serve the areas. During 1982-83, the same number of vehicles was engaged. However, the use of the private contractor's vehicle was not required in 1983-84.
