asked the Minister for Justice if it is his intention to provide extra staff at the Navan Garda station to assist them in the control of the drug problem.
, Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 491 and 492 together. Particulars of the number of gardaí of all ranks at each of the stations situated in County Meath on 31 December in each of the years 1982 to 1984 and on 28 February 1985 are given in the table hereunder. The Garda authorities have informed me that they propose to allocate an extra member to Ceanannus Mór station when the next group of recruit gardaí complete their training at the end of this month and that the question of allocating additional members to stations in County Meath will be kept under review.
As regards the question of increasing Garda strength at Navan station to deal with drug abuse, the Garda authorities report that they consider that the current strength at the station is adequate to meet the present police needs of the area, including the need to prevent and detect drug abuse. A total of 17 members assigned to Navan station have completed a special in-service training course on the various aspects of drug abuse, preventive measures and the special skills needed in the investigation of drug offences and while these members are not engaged exclusively on anti-drugs work, they pay particular attention to the problem.
