Vol. 356 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Leinster House Disabled Persons' Facilities.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give details of the facilities which have been made available in Leinster House in the last five years to make it more accessible to disabled persons.

The existing facilities for access by the disabled to Leinster House were provided in 1978. Until late last year the Office of Public Works had not received any request from the Leinster House authorities for the provision of additional facilities. However, following a request in November 1984 from the Committee on Procedure and Privileges, a preliminary survey on the feasibility of providing access for the disabled throughout the Leinster House complex has now been completed and has been submitted to the committee for consideration. Further instructions from the committee are awaited.

What further facilities are envisaged in the report?

I am very anxious that this work should be done. This is not a matter for the Office of Public Works. We carry out improvements in Leinster House as they are requested by the Leinster House authorities. They are paid for out of that Vote. I am very anxious to have these facilities greatly improved. I have not got a list of what is involved. I have a list of the facilities which were provided. We are awaiting further instructions from the Leinster House authorities and we will be more than anxious to expedite the carrying out of these works when we get the go ahead.
