Vol. 356 No. 10

Written Answers. - Marriage Gratuities Nurses.

568.

asked the Minister for Health if he will give details, year by year, of the total number of nurses paid gratuities annually since the marriage gratuities scheme started; the total amount of money paid in gratuities each year; the present position on the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The attached statement includes details of all marriage gratuities paid to nurses since 1978 under the voluntary hospitals superannuation scheme. Existing pensionable female officers and servants appointed before 1978 retain their right to a marriage gratuity if they resign by reason of marriage within specified time limits.

Marriage gratuities are not granted to female officers and servants who become pensionable under the Local Government (Superannuation) Code after 1 June 1978, or to female officers who become pensionable under the voluntary hospitals superannuation scheme after 1 September 1978. Information in regard to marriage gratuities paid to health board staff is not immediately to hand and I will communicate with the Deputy when the relevant information becomes available.
