Vol. 356 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Harbour Development.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount being allocated by his Department for harbour development in County Mayo for 1985.

A sum of £245,000 has been allocated from Subhead E of Vote 10 (Public Works and Buildings) in 1985 in respect of an improvement scheme being carried out at Roonagh Point, County Mayo.

The question of allocating funds in respect of projects undertaken by the Commissioners of Public Works, but paid for from the Votes of the Department of Fisheries and Forestry and Roinn na Gaeltachta, is a matter for those Departments.

May I take it from the Minister's reply that the only harbour work in operation in Mayo at the moment is that to which he has referred at Roonagh Point?

The Commissioners of Public Works are concerned in the carrying out of works at other harbours in Mayo, but these are funded by other Departments. The only amount in the Estimate for the Office of Public Works refers to the one which I mentioned.

From the information available to the Minister from other Departments, can he indicate if it is likely that any more harbour works will be undertaken in Mayo this year? I am assuming that the Minister would have information from the Department of Fisheries and Forestry in relation to works which are likely to be undertaken in 1985.

I have not that information. Works are being undertaken at present for other Departments in Mayo. For instance, in Killala there is steel sheet piling on the pier, which are ancillary works; on the Bone Rock the provision of a lighted beacon; on Inch Island the removal of a silt bar; and in Belderg the provision of a landing platform. These works are being carried out for the Department of Fisheries and Forestry and are funded by them. I cannot discuss what their estimate might be. The works sponsored by Roinn na Gaeltachta are at Rinroe, namely the extension of the pier there. I am not able to give the allocation for these projects.
