Vol. 356 No. 10

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Assistance.

656.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reasons unemployment assistance has not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Galway; if he is aware of this person's circumstances; if he will give details of the amount of income credited to this person; if he will direct his Department to reopen this case and pay the assistance; and if he will make a statement on this situation.

The person concerned is not entitled to payment of unemployment assistance as the means assessed against him £36 weekly derived from the value of board and lodgings on his uncle's holding, exceed the maximum rate of unemployment assistance appropriate to him.

He appealed against the amount of means assessed against him and an appeals officer also assessed him with means at £36 weekly. He was notified of the decision of the appeals officer on 13 February 1985. The decision of the appeals officer is final and the case could only be reopened if the appellant furnished new facts or evidence which were not made available to the appeals officer on the date on which he made his decision.
