Vol. 356 No. 11

Written Answers. - Drogheda National Monument.

504.

asked the Minister for Finance when his Department proposes to sanction the work at St. Laurence's Gate, Drogheda, one of Ireland's most prominent national monuments; when the work is likely to commence; and if it will be completed before the 1985 tourist season commences.

There are no proposals before me in relation to work at St. Laurence's Gate, a national monument which is owned by the Corporation of Drogheda. I understand that there is correspondence between the Commissioners of Public Works and the corporation regarding a proposal by local private interest groups to take over responsibility for the development and operation of the monument as a tourist attraction. The Commissioners have advised the corporation as to the works they consider necessary in order to make the monument safe and have offered to undertake these works on a repayment basis.
