Vol. 356 No. 12

Written Answers. - Representations to South African Authorities.

469.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the protests or representations the Government have made to South African authorities concerning the arrest of members of the United Democratic Front, particularly concerning the case of 67 year old Ms. Albertina Sisulu who is due to go on trial on March 15 for treason; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland recently joined with her partners in the Ten in making a demarche to the South African authorities on the arrests of members of the United Democratic Front, including Ms. Albertina Sisulu. The Ten expressed their deep concern about the arrests of the UDF leaders and sought their immediate release. This was the third demarche in six months by the Ten to the South African authorities about their treatment of political opponents. The Government will continue to express with our partners in the Ten, and in any other appropriate way, our grave concern about the unjust and repressive actions of the South African authorities.
