Vol. 357 No. 3

Written Answers. - Income Tax.

546.

asked the Minister for Finance when a tax rebate will be paid to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 who applied in August 1984; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer took up his latest employment on 12 May 1984. As the inspector had no details in regard to the taxpayer's employment position for the period from 6 April to 11 May 1984, a certificate of tax free allowances for 1984-85 on a non-cumulative (Week 1) basis was issued to him on 20 June 1984, pending receipt of the relevant details when he called to the tax office in August 1984. The taxpayer ceased employment recently but, as he has not submitted a formal claim for repayment of tax on the grounds of unemployment, the inspector will now communicate direct with him in the matter.

asked the Minister for Finance the reason the tax-free allowance of a person (details supplied) in County Meath has been cut by £44 per year because of his small savings in a credit union; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Interest paid on moneys on deposit with credit unions falls to be treated as income for tax purposes. I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that the taxpayer's tax-free allowances for 1985-86 have been reduced by £44 to take account of estimated credit union interest receivable in that year by his wife. The inspector wrote to the taxpayer in August 1983, for certain information which was required to enable his tax affairs to be brought up-to-date but the information has not yet been supplied. The inspector will now send a further letter direct to the taxpayer in this matter.
