Vol. 357 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tuam (Galway) Water Scheme.

503.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the serious difficulties being encountered by the people of the town of Tuam and its environs with the public water supply; the proposals he has to rectify this serious matter; if he will direct that the plans submitted to him by Galway County Council be sanctioned immediately; the total amount of money made available for the proposed new water scheme; the date on which this scheme will commence and any other relevant details; and if he will make a statement on the entire situation.

It is a matter for each local sanitary authority to determine the water supply needs within its functional area and to submit proposals to meet these needs for my approval. A preliminary report for the proposed Tuam regional water supply scheme was received in my Department on 5 March 1985. The report is incomplete and I am not in a position to make a decision on the scheme until the necessary additional documentation, recently requested from the local authority, is received in my Department. As this proposal is at preliminary report stage the question of finance does not arise.
