Vol. 357 No. 5

Written Answers. - Heavy Duty Machinery Safety.

538.

asked the Minister for Labour the regulations regarding the provision of sound-proof cabs and safety cabs on heavy duty machinery.

It is assumed that the Deputy's reference to heavy duty machinery refers to lifting equipment and other plant which is commonly used on places such as construction sites.

None of the occupational safety and health Acts or Regulations administered and enforced by my Department contain specific provision regarding safety or sound proof cabins on such machinery. However, the Factories (Noise) Regulations, 1975, which also apply to every place where building operations or works of engineering construction are carried on, provide that it shall be the duty of the occupier to see that adequate steps are taken to ensure that sound pressure levels which could cause harm to persons employed, are kept at the lowest practicable level.
