Vol. 357 No. 7

Written Answers. - Gortahork (Donegal) Speed Limit Area.

593.

asked the Minister for the Environment when it is proposed to sanction the recommendation from Donegal County Council that the speed limit area west of Gortahork village, County Donegal, be extended to the Lower Keeldrum crossroads, Gortahork.

Reviews of speed limits are conducted periodically by local authorities in accordance with guidelines laid down by my Department. Proposals arising from such reviews are dealt with on a county by county basis. Following examination by the Department of the technical and legal aspects of proposals, regulations are made giving legal effect to the proposals. In particular, the examination takes into account the implications of proposals for speed limits on national roads.

At present, the Department are examining recommendations from Donegal County Council for an extension of the 30 m.p.h. speed limit on national secondary road N56 at Gortahork in conjunction with proposals submitted by the council for revision of speed limits generally in County Donegal. This examination is now at an advanced stage and I hope to have the necessary regulations finalised shortly.
