Vol. 357 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Employment Exchange.

15.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware of the serious overcrowding at the Galway Employment Exchange; and the steps he will take to provide better facilities for the increasing number of people now dependent on unemployment payments.

The increase in the number of unemployed persons attending Galway employment exchange, and the staff required to deal with them, has undoubtedly put the accommodation available under severe pressure. It is considered that the solution to the present situation lies in the provision of suitable alternative accommodation in Galway city for use by my Department as an employment exchange. The provision of such accommodation is being urgently pursued by the Office of Public Works who also propose to undertake in the meantime a maintenance works programme on the existing premises.
