Vol. 357 No. 12

Written Answers. - Horticultural Development Group.

625.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will clarify the present situation with regard to the horticultural development group, in the light of recent press reports that it has been disbanded, and especially given the urgent need to promote import substitution in the fruit and vegetable sector.

The Horticultural Development Group was appointed in April 1980, for a period of three years, to examine and make recommendations on the development of the horticultural industry. During that period it presented reports on tomatoes, apples and processed vegetables. The group was reappointed in May 1983 and subsequently presented reports on other commodity sectors of horticulture and on the question of an organisational structure for the industry. Having fulfilled its terms of reference the group was wound up in December 1984.

The reports and recommendations of the group are a valuable contribution towards the development of the horticultural industry, including the replacement of imports, by home production. A number of its recommendations have been implemented already and others are being considered in consultation with the industry interests concerned.
