Vol. 358 No. 8

Written Answers. - Legionnaire's Disease.

614.

asked the Minister for Health if there are any recorded statistics of the incidence of legionnaire's disease in this country; and if he will detail the checks that are made on public buildings such as hospitals, hotels and boarding schools to ensure that this disease is prevented from occuring in this country.

A total of eight cases of legionnaires disease have been reported in Ireland to date. Seven of these contracted the disease while on holidays abroad. In December 1982, my Department specified the measures to be taken towards reducing the risk of the occurrence of cases of legionnaire's disease. The circular has been reviewed in the light of our current epidemiological knowledge of the disease and no changes are considered necessary in its provisions. The situation is being kept under review.

In addition my Department circulate information about the disease to the directors of community care and medical officers of health. The availability of this information on a regular basis enables the DCC MOH to evaluate the need for interventions in his area to protect the public against the disease.
