Vol. 359 No. 1

Written Answers. - Long Term Illness Scheme.

553.

asked the Minister for Health the cost of including drugs to persons under 16 years of age suffering from bronchial asthma through the long term illness scheme.

It is not possible to estimate the number of people who would be diagnosed as suffering from bronchial asthma if this could be included in the scheme. Accordingly it is not possible to give an indication of the cost but it would be likely to involve at least a doubling of the current expenditure on the scheme.

554.

asked the Minister for Health the cost of including inhalants to persons suffering from asthma through the long term illness scheme.

The cost of including inhalants for asthmatics in the long term illness scheme is dependent on the number of cases, the severity of the condition in the individual case and the type of medication involved. While it is not possible to indicate these accurately, it is estimated that the net additional cost involved would be in excess of IR£10 million. This is roughly equivalent to the total expenditure on the scheme last year.
