Vol. 359 No. 6

Written Answers. - Pension and Gratuity Payment.

70.

Mr. Cowen

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the reason a gratuity payment and pension have not yet been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Offaly who retired from his Department on 19 February 1985 after 37 years' service; when payment will now be made; and if he will explain the details of how the gratuity is computed.

The person concerned applied for a retirement pension on health grounds on 19 February 1985. However, the necessary procedures under the relevant retirement scheme had to be complied with and these aspects, including sanction via the Department of the Public Service, were not completed until 16 May 1985 thereby clearing the way for calculation of appropriate pension and gratuity. The gratuity was paid earlier this month and payment of pension, with effect from 19 February last, will commence shortly.

The amount of the gratuity in these cases is calculated on the following formula: annual salary × period of service × 3/80 less deductions (where appropriate) for outstanding contributions towards the widows' and children's pension scheme.
