Vol. 359 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Galway Unemployment.

9.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he will make a statement on the steps he is taking to alleviate the very serious unemployment situation in east Galway.

The Industrial Development Authority, which is the body responsible for the promotion of industrial development, approved grant assistance of £4.25 million to industrial projects in County Galway in 1984. It is expected that about 80 new jobs will be created in east Galway arising from certain of these projects and another project for which grant assistance was approved early in 1985.

The IDA will continue to make every effort to secure new industries for the area where they have 114 acres and over 55,144 sq. ft. of factory space available for industry.

Does the Minister agree that east Galway and other parts of the west are in some difficulty in so far as the location of new manufacturing industries are concerned? Can he indicate, from the figures available, the total square footage of empty factory space in Connacht?

That is another question.

I am sure it is attached to the Minister's brief.

No, that is a specific question.

In relation to Galway, what is the total square footage of empty factory space?

The question relates to east Galway.

I have already given it.

Could the Minister please give it again?

There are 55,144 square feet of factory space available for industry.

There are 200,000 square feet of factory space available in County Mayo.

This refers to east Galway.

I agree, but the same applies.

I recollect dealing comprehensively with questions about County Mayo recently.
