Vol. 360 No. 5

Written Answers. - UCD Nurse Tutors' Course.

70.

asked the Minister for Health the reason his Department refused to sanction the training course for nurse tutors at University College Dublin.

The course commenced in 1984 without approval from An Bord Altranais and despite a recommendation that the existing two year diploma course should be continued for at least one further year to allow the position generally in relation to third level studies for nurses to be considered in an orderly fashion. In the circumstances, it was considered that formal support could not be given to the attendance of health services employees at the course. Discussions have since taken place between UCD and An Bord Altranais and the latter have recently indicated their approval to the course subject to certain entry requirements being met. The position with regard to the release of staff to attend the course is now being reviewed by my Department.
