asked the Minister for Labour the number of people at present employed under the social employment scheme; the number expected to apply for this scheme before the end of this year; and if he is satisfied with the progress of this scheme.

There are at present 740 persons employed on 80 projects under the social employment scheme. A further 900 projects have been approved with an employment potential of 2,500 persons. The level of employment under the scheme depends on many factors, particularly the number of sponsors submitting suitable projects. At present, there are approximately 1,600 projects either in operation, approved for starting or being processed. These projects have an employment potential of about 5,700. Against this background, we should be well on the way to achieving by the end of this year the target of 10,000 participants for the first full year of operation of the scheme. I am generally satisfied with the progress of the scheme.
