Vol. 361 No. 2

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - National School Staffing.

3.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the hardship that will be caused by the loss of a teacher at St. Mary's national school; and if she will consider having this teacher retained in this particular case.

The new arrangement for schools in disadvantaged areas, which was introduced in the 1985-86 school year, provides for additional teaching assistance related to the school size. Under this arrangement St. Mary's CBS national school qualified for one additional teacher. It would not be open to me therefore to make a further staffing concession.

I should mention that the school has the services of a remedial teacher and a supernumerary teacher, resulting in a very favourable pupil-teacher ratio.
