Vol. 361 No. 4

Written Answers. - Hospital Fire Precautions.

69.

asked the Minister for Health if he is satisfied that as full a use as possible is made of flame retardant and flame resistant materials and fabrics for bed clothing, night wear, furnishings and furniture in hospitals and homes.

Where the Department of Health is directly involved in the equipping and furnishing of hospitals and homes, the practice is to insist on flame retardant and flame resistant materials where feasible and practicable. The authorities of all hospitals and homes are obliged to comply with any requirements specified by the fire prevention authorities. In the case of private nursing homes, there is provision in the Homes for Incapacitated Persons Regulations, 1985, requiring that materials contained in bedding and internal furnishings have adequate fire retardant properties and where possible have low levels of toxicity when on fire.
