Vol. 361 No. 6

Written Answers. - General Insurance Commission Rates.

27.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is satisfied that the reduction in commission rates for certain classes of general insurance has not exacerbated the trading problems facing insurance intermediaries.

The revision in commission rates referred to by the Deputy is essentially a commercial matter between the insurers and the brokers concerned and I do not propose to comment in any detail on the particular issue involved. I have however pointed out, on a number of occasions, that it is the policy holder who ultimately pays these commissions and that, in his interest, one should expect that commission rates are kept to reasonable levels. I do not think any Deputy would disagree with that.
