Vol. 361 No. 6

Written Answers. - Manufacturing Industry Employment Statistics.

41.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism (a) the numbers employed in manufacturing industry in the years 1982 to 1985, inclusive and (b) his Department's projections for employment in manufacturing industry from 1986 and beyond.

Seasonally adjusted figures published by the Central Statistics Office for employment in manufacturing industries show the following:

Year

Employment

(position at March)

('000)

1982

218.4

1983

204.1

1984

196.8

1985

188.6

The White Paper on Industrial Policy set an objective of achieving a net growth in manufacturing employment of between 3,000 and 6,000 jobs a year in the period up to 1994. I am confident that these targets will be achieved through the implementation of the new policies set out in the White Paper.
