Vol. 361 No. 7

Written Answers. - Local Authority Building Materials.

31.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will grant approval to local authorities for the future use of teak or aluminium doors and windows in future houses.

Because of their relatively high cost, local authorities have been advised that excessive or unnecessary use of aluminium or hardwood windows in their houses should be avoided. However, where designs submitted by local authorities for approval provide for the use of teak or aluminium doors and windows, they are considered on their merits taking into consideration comparable prices for the components in question and their softwood equivalents. The price and quality of building materials are kept under regular review in my Department with the object of getting the best value for money in the local authority housing programme.
