Vol. 361 No. 8

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 19, 20 and 7. By agreement the Dáil shall sit later than 9 p.m. today and not later than 12 midnight today and business shall be interrupted not later than 11.30 p.m. Also by agreement item No. 7 shall be taken at 8.30 p.m. and Private Members Business shall be No. 92.

Are the arrangements for late sitting agreed? Agreed.

In view of its urgency and seriousness I should like to ask if the Minister for Labour and the Minister for Energy will use their good offices to attempt to solve the ESB dispute in the Cork area?

That does not arise on the Order of Business.

I am raising it because the matter is urgent and serious.

The matter does not arise on the Order of Business, I am sorry.

In my view the matter is important.

Having regard to the fact that Minister Bruton, or the Government, have not done anything other than make pious and empty comments, I should like to give notice of my intention to raise on the Adjournment the loss of more than 100 jobs in Navan town. I request information on the secret negotiations Minister Bruton alleges took place for 12 months prior to the closure——

If the question is allowed on the Adjournment the Deputy can make his case then, but not now.

I want to inform the House of the position. The name of the company is Nike (Ireland) Limited, Navan. I should like to bring to the notice of the House the fact that a further 30 jobs have been lost in Navan due to the closure of a clothing company called Galanta Menswear Limited.

The Deputy can make that case on the Adjournment.

I should like to raise on the Adjournment the jailing of a young housewife and mother of four children for debt last week on foot of an order obtained by a finance company.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

Could the Taoiseach advise if the pending legislation announced yesterday by the Minister for Labour on dangerous substances and chemicals will be brought before the House in this session?

I should have to have notice of that question. I am not certain if it will be brought before the House in this session, I am sorry, Deputy. I am happy to be able to give the impression that it will be immediately afterwards.

With the permission of the Chair, I wish to raise on the Adjournment the prolonged and complex delay in the payment of statutory redundancy payments to the now redundant workers of National Aluminium.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.

(Limerick West): I request, for the fourth time, permission to raise on the Adjournment the question of the implementation of the EC Young Farmers' Establishment Agency Scheme included in the farm improvement scheme.

I shall communicate with Deputy Noonan. For the benefit of the Deputies, I would remind them that the Adjournment debate will not commence tonight until 11.30 p.m. I am just drawing the attention of the House to that.

I hope we shall be here.

To an enthusiastic Deputy, that is no problem.

I wish to raise on the Adjournment a case in which a man in Cork, having been sentenced to eight years' penal servitude in the Cork Criminal Court in February and been convicted by a jury of robbery with violence on an 81 year old man and also his invalided daughter, was freed after the High Court ruled that the judge in the case, Judge Fawcett, did not have the power to sentence him to penal servitude for the crime of which he was convicted.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.
