Vol. 361 No. 9

Written Answers. - Acid Rain Monitoring.

37.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will make a statement on the effects of acid rain on the Irish forests, and the proposals, if any, he has to monitor the situation.

There is no evidence to date of Irish forests being damaged by acid rain. Monitoring of the position is, however, being carried out at seven sites throughout the country by An Foras Forbartha and the ESB. The Meteorological Office also monitors pollutants in rainfall on a monthly basis at eight sites throughout the country. My Department are maintaining close liaison with these monitoring arrangements and are keeping the situation under constant review.

Questions Nos. 38 and 39 taken as oral.
