Vol. 361 No. 12

Written Answers. - Tourism Promotion.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he is satisfied that there is sufficient contact with Irish groups and organisations in Britain and the USA in the promotion of tourism.

I am satisfied that Bord Fáilte and, indeed, other agencies engaged in promoting Ireland as a tourism destination appreciate fully the value of contact and working through Irish groups in Britain and in the USA.

I would refer the Deputy to the White Paper on Tourism Policy which envisages, following the decline in emigration in the sixties and seventies, a likely reduction in the ethnic market in those countries. Accordingly as this occurs Bord Fáilte will have to respond by placing greater emphasis in their promotion programmes on non-ethnic business. Nevertheless the Deputy may be assured that I will ensure that Bord Fáilte and other agencies will continue to maintain contact, as desirable with Irish groups and organisations.
