Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - Intervention Butter.

193.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he considers that the suggestion recently put forward at the National Co-operative Conference that the problem of the EC butter mountain might be alleviated by transforming the butter surplus into animal feed over the period of a two to three year programme merits consideration; and if he will approve such a course of action to improve the climate of the commercial market.

The reduction of the large EC stock of the invention butter will require a series of disposal measures on both the internal and external markets. A number of such measures are already in operation and I understand that further schemes, including the incorporation of intervention butter in animal feed, are under consideration by the EC Commission.

I have consistently pressed for an effective disposal policy; however, the introduction of specific measures is a matter for the EC Commission.
