Vol. 362 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Wexford Vocational Schools.

206.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the urgent need for playing facilities to complement Kilmuckridge vocational school and that land is available adjacent to the school; if she will give approval to Wexford VEC for the purchase of this land as it is unlikely that any such parcel of land will ever become available again; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department is prepared to approve the acquisition of additional land at Kilmuckridge vocational school at a price advised by the Valuation Office. The price in question was notified to the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee in July last. It is not open to my Department to agree to a price in excess of that advised by the Valuation Office.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the terrible condition of prefabs being used as classrooms in Adamstown vocational school, County Wexford, and of the conditions being endured by the teachers and pupils of that school; if she will immediately sanction the start of the school; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department, in a letter to the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee dated 14 November 1985, officially sanctioned acceptance of tenders for a new permanent classroom block at Adamstown vocational school. The new accommodation is intended to replace the existing prefabricated classrooms at the school and is based on proposals made in the matter by the committee.

208.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the confusion created by her Department in relation to the location of the proposed new vocational school at Gorey, County Wexford; if she will ensure that the school will be built on a suitable site with adequate facilities for future expansion and for playing facilities; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My Department's position is, and has been, that the proposed new vocational school at Gorey will form part of the second level school complex to be built on the Loreto school site. Architectural planning of the complex commenced recently at a briefing session between officials of my Department, the school authorities and their consultants. The first stage of the planning procedures relates to site suitability and my Department awaits the consultants' report on the matter.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the cramped conditions endured by teachers and pupils in Bunclody vocational school, County Wexford; and when she will grant permission to Wexford County Vocational Education Committee to go to tender; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The planning of the proposed extension to Bunclody vocational school has reached the stage where amended bills of quantities (which included extensive revision) and tender documents have been received from the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee recently and are currently under examination in the Department. When this examination has been completed the Department will be in touch with the vocational education committee. Pending completion of this examination, I am not in a position to say when this project may proceed to tender.
