Vol. 362 No. 2

Written Answers. - Security at Employment Exchanges.

14.

asked the Minister for Justice the measures he proposes to take to ensure the safety of social welfare recipients and the staff of employment exchanges throughout the country with reference to the number of armed robberies that have taken place at exchanges during the past few months; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): The Garda Síochána have provided comprehensive advice to the Department of Social Welfare regarding all employment exchanges — both in relation to the premises themselves and in relation to procedures. Substantial Garda resources are also deployed in the provision of additional security, according to circumstances. These measures are relevant to the protection of members of the public and of the staff as well as to the protection of cash.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the question of security of social welfare premises is kept under constant review.
