Vol. 362 No. 2

Written Answers. - Cork Prison.

16.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in relation to the building of a new cell block in Cork Prison he will indicate: (i) the estimated cost; (ii) the fees payable to outside consultants; (iii) whether the Office of Public Works were directly involved in this project; (iv) the estimated date for completion; and if he will confirm that educational facilities will be restored to the prison when this new block is complete.

Limerick East): A contract for the construction of an additional 50-cell unit in Cork Prison was placed on 14 October 1985 for completion in 26 working weeks. The contract provided that the contractor would be responsible for the professional input required and for costs in this regard, No outside consultants were employed by my Department on this project and the Office of Public Works are not involved. It would be contrary to established practice to disclose the contract price but it is less than £600,000. The new cell unit will enable the purpose-built education unit, now being temporarily used to provide dormitory accommodation for approximately 30 prisoners, to be used again for educational purposes.
