Vol. 362 No. 5

Written Answers. - County Tipperary Scholarship Award.

157.

asked the Minister for Education if in view of the efforts made by a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary in pursuing a course in environmental economics and in view of the background and exceptional family circumstances involved, she will now give approval for the award of a scholarship as requested by County Tipperary (North Riding) Vocational Education Committee.

The student in question was eligible under the terms of the 1981 scholarships scheme for a scholarship provided that he embarked on an approved course of at least two years full time duration at that time. The student did not pursue such a course and did not seek a deferral of scholarship in accordance with the terms of the 1981 scheme which allowed for a deferral period not exceeding two years except in exceptional circumstances. County Tipperary (North Riding) Vocational Education Committee sought sanction recently of my Department to approve of the award of a scholarship to the student to pursue a course in environmental economics in 1985-86 at the College of Technology, Bolton Street. This sanction was not given as it was not considered that the circumstances of the case have been shown to be such as to warrant the award of a scholarship at this stage under the 1981 scheme.
