Vol. 362 No. 9

Written Answers. - Sub-Standard Car Tyres.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he has received reports of substandard car tyres being available on the Irish market and, if so, if he will indicate the action he proposes to take.

In October 1984 at my request, the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards made a voluntary Irish standard for car tyres. The standard was drafted with the co-operation of the major tyre manufacturers and distributors in Ireland and is designed to discourage the sale of substandard and inadequately marked tyres on the Irish market. It is my intention to introduce mandatory requirements for car tyres as soon as possible; this would make it an offence to market car tyres which do not meet the required specifications.
