Vol. 362 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Regulations.

16.

asked the Minister for the Environment if the proposed building regulations are again being revised although they have never been introduced.

The proposed building regulations are not being generally revised. However, when the regulations are being made following enactment of the Building Control Bill it will be necessary to update the draft to take account of developments in building technology and new standards and codes of practice which have been published since the proposed building regulations were issued.

Would the Minister not agree that we have a series of amending regulations which have never been put into operation? It is time that they were.

I would agree with the Deputy. I would be anxious that the House would pass the Building Control Bill as soon as possible and that the methods of administration would be agreed by the relevant parties. The current draft building regulations will remain predominantly the same but necessary updating will have to take place from time to time. That is all that is envisaged.

When will the Building Control Bill be re-introduced to the House? It has not been back since the first day of the Second Stage debate.

I do not have that information but I can obtain it for the Deputy from the Chief Whip's Office.
