Vol. 362 No. 11

Written Answers. - Redundancy Payments.

85.

asked the Minister for Labour the amount of each award made by the Employment Appeals Tribunal arising from an investigation held on 4 July 1985, affecting 25 former employees of Irish Shipping Limited; the date (s) of application to his Department for payment under the Employer's Insolvency Act, 1984; the amounts paid from the fund; and if he will make a statement on a report in the media (details supplied) to the effect that payment of compensation has been stopped by the liquidator.

I assume that the question refers to the appeals of 25 former employees of Irish Shipping Limited which were heard by the Employment Apeals Tribunal on 4 June 1985 and 19 July 1985. The tribunal issued a decision in these cases 12 November 1985 awarding payments of statutory redundancy lump sums as detailed in the attached schedule.

To date, my Department has not received any application for payment from the redundancy and employers' insolvency fund of the amounts awarded by the tribunal under the Redundancy Payments Acts.

I understand, however, that the liquidator is appealing the decision of the tribunal in these cases to the High Court. As the liquidator has a right of appeal on a point of law to the High Court under the Redundancy Payments Acts there is no basis on which I could intervene.

Following is the Schedule:
