Vol. 362 No. 14

Written Answers. - Bacon Curing Industry.

22.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the plans the IDA has for the rationalisation of the bacon curing industry; the number of applications that have been received for grant-in-aid; and the number granted.

IDA plans for the pigmeat industry involve a reduction in the number of slaughtering plants and the development of central slaughtering units of international veterinary standard with a minimum throughput of 6,000 pigs per week. The exploration of joint venture and licensing opportunities together with the development of new added value products are also envisaged.

The IDA policy in respect of assistance in the funding of expenditure for slaughtering facilities provides that only factories moving towards a minimum of 6,000 pigs per week will be grant aided. To date five investment proposals to establish central slaughtering units have been received and approved for grant aid.
