Vol. 362 No. 14

Written Answers. - River Lee Downstream Crossing.

37.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will expedite his decision on the building of a tunnel across the River Lee on the outskirts of Cork city; and if he is aware of the importance of an early decision.

The project is the subject of a bridge order application by Cork Corporation under Part IV of the Local Government Act, 1946, and a public local inquiry into the application was held on 8, 9, and 10 October 1985. There will be no avoidable delay in reaching a decision on the application. Without prejudice to the outcome of the bridge order application, the downstream crossing is scheduled, in the new road plan, for consideration for construction after 1987. The priority to be accorded to projects listed for construction after 1987 will be reviewed by the end of 1986 taking account of cost benefit and other relevant studies.
