Vol. 362 No. 15

Written Answers - Rosslare Strand.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the rock groyne built at the northern tip of the Rosslare burrow has been very successful with a big build up of material to the south protecting that part of the burrow; how it is proposed to finance the £5 million project involving 13 such groynes on the strand at intervals southward; if it is his intention since CIE are responsible for the protection of the coast, that they will be asked to contribute and, if so, the amount; and if he will make a statement of the matter.

I am aware that the extension of the rock groyne, undertaken this year by the Commissioners of Public Works as part of the ongoing maintenance programme at Rosslare strand, has had the desired beneficial effect. The financing of the proposed coast protection scheme at Rosslare strand will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the Coast Protection Act, 1963. At this stage, I am unable to state details of the funding arrangements.
