Vol. 363 No. 2

Written Answers. - Land Zoning.

33.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of farm land zoned for (1) industrial purposes and (2) residential purposes in (a) County Dublin, (b) Cork city, (c) Limerick city, and (d) Galway city in the years 1980 to 1985; and the amount of agricultural land which has been zoned for such development purposes over the period 1986 to 1990.

In the development plans made under the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, planning authorities zone land for particular uses consistent with their stated development objectives. The land zoned for (1) industrial purposes and (2) residential purposes in (a) County Dublin, (b) Cork city, (c) Limerick city, and (d) Galway city is indicated in the current development plans for these areas. These plans must be reviewed at least every five years and their expiry dates vary, depending on the date of adoption. The current development plans for the areas concerned expire on the following dates:

County Dublin

Cork Corporation

Limerick Corporation

Galway Corporation

30 March 1988

22 April 1990

31 October 1986

15 June 1986

It is not possible, therefore, to provide information on the lines requested for all areas in relation to the particular periods referred to in the question.

According to the planning authorities concerned, the areas of land zoned for development for (1) industrial purposes and (2) residential purposes in the current plans is as follows:

County Dublin acres

Cork City acres

Limerick City acres

Galway City acres

Industry

1,000 (approx)

98

Nil

72

Housing

3,000 (approx)

151

280

586

The foregoing figures relate to all land zoned for development for the purposes indicated. Information on the amounts of that land which is in actual use for farming is not available.
