Vol. 363 No. 2

Written Answers. - Nenagh (Tipperary) Crime.

71.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the alarming increase in the level of crime, particularly street crime, in Nenagh, he will ensure an adequate Garda presence in the town at all times and particularly at night, to ensure the safety of people in their homes and to protect their property from deliberate or wanton damage; and if he will make a statement of his intentions in this serious matter.

Limerick East): The arrangements for the policing of individual areas are a matter for the Garda authorities having regard to their assessment of needs, overall resources and other demands on Garda services.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that while there was an increase in indictable crime in the town of Nenagh in 1985, as compared with 1984, the local Garda officers consider that appropriate measures, including round-the-clock patrols, are being taken to deal with the situation. I am informed that the crime detection rate in the area has improved and, as the question refers in particular to street crime, the Garda Síochána have stated that within the past week a person has been sentenced in connection with window-breaking and that two others stand charged in respect of similar offences.

The Garda authorities say that every effort will continue to be made to deal with crime in Nenagh and that the policing arrangements for the town will be kept under review.
