Vol. 363 No. 10

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Scheme.

74.

asked the Minister for the Environment if Waterford city has been included in the urban renewal scheme, and if not, the reason.

The programme of tax incentives proposed to apply to certain inner city areas is intended to secure the redevelopment and reconstruction of areas most in need by encouraging investment in urban renewal projects. The scheme is being applied to Dublin, Cork and Limerick since these are the cities where the problems of inner city decay and dereliction are most acute, persistent and extensive.

The operation of the scheme will be kept under constant review bearing in mind the situation in other urban areas. Meanwhile, the revised scheme of housing grants which is now in operation is expected to have a considerable beneficial impact on employment in the construction industry and on the refurbishment of many older housing units in all urban areas.
