Vol. 363 No. 11

Written Answers. - Lough Sheelin Slurry Removal.

47.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will provide moneys in 1986 for the removal of slurry from the Lough Sheelin catchment area.

It was initially envisaged that the State would subsidise the removal of slurry from the Sheelin catchment for two years only, 1981 and 1982. In the event, however, special arrangements were made to continue the scheme during 1983 and again in 1984, with a phased reduction in the level of State subsidy. Continuation of the subsidy in the latter year was conditional on the pig producers involved undertaking full responsibility for financing the slurry transport arrangements from 1 January 1985. This undertaking was given and it is now a matter for the pig producers to finance the removal of slurry from the catchment.
