Vol. 363 No. 13

Written Answers. - Fishing Vessels.

26.

asked the Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Tourism the total number of fishing boats repossessed by An Bord Iascaigh Mhara during the past five years; if he would consider leasing repossessed boats to young fishermen, particularly those who have completed courses at Greencastle Training School to help them get their careers started; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Fifty-six fishing vessels have been repossessed or surrendered in the course of the last five years. It is the normal practice that such vessels are sold or re-issued to other fishermen and as far as practical sympathetic consideration is given to applications from suitably qualified young fishermen.

I fully appreciate the importance of assisting young fishermen, particularly those who have secured certificates of competency following attendance at training courses at the National Fishery School in Greencastle. Proposals are under consideration at present on a scheme designed to assist such fishermen to become owners of this type of vessel.
